Hail-resistant roofing: what the latest study means for contractors

A new Alberta report puts roof resilience in the spotlight. Here is what U.S. contractors should document before discussing upgrades or insurance savings.

Roofing industry news · October 8, 2026

A hail-resilience story in this morning’s Roofing Contractor newsletter is worth a closer look. The publication’s October 6 report describes an Insurance Bureau of Canada study, conducted by MNP, on Alberta properties facing substantial hail exposure.

The news—and its limits

The report describes potential insurance-premium reductions of up to 50% when homeowners install hail-resistant roofing and siding. That figure concerns the Alberta market; it is not a promised discount for a homeowner in Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, or another U.S. state. Read Roofing Contractor’s report ↗.

Our contractor takeaway: document the actual product

A broad “impact-resistant” description leaves questions unanswered. For a useful estimate or supplement review, collect evidence that connects the specific roof system to the work proposed:

  • Existing product identification, packaging labels, and close-up photos when available.
  • The proposed product’s exact name, manufacturer literature, and applicable installation instructions.
  • Supplier pricing and an itemized explanation of the difference between replacement scope and a requested upgrade.
  • The insurer’s written requirements before presenting any potential premium discount to the homeowner.

Keep upgrades and covered repairs clear

Our recommendation is to separate the documented repair or replacement scope from optional improvements. A resilience study does not determine what an individual policy covers or what a carrier will approve. A clear file makes those conversations easier to follow.
