Claim Guide

A contractor’s guide to roofing claim supplements.

Understand what a supplement is, what supports it, and how the process moves from estimate review to closeout.

What is a claim supplement?

A supplement asks the carrier to review additional or revised scope, quantities, or pricing supported by the claim file. It can address items omitted from the original estimate or conditions documented as the job progresses.

What can support a request?

  • Photos showing the condition and location of the affected component.
  • Measurements and sketches supporting quantities.
  • Job-specific bids, quotes, invoices, and scope descriptions.
  • Applicable manufacturer documentation and local requirements.
  • Carrier correspondence and inspection findings relevant to the disputed scope.

Each request should explain the work and the evidence supporting it. An estimating line item, code reference, or photo does not by itself establish coverage for every claim.

The basic process

  1. Review the file. Compare the original estimate with the documented work.
  2. Prepare the supplement. Organize the revised scope and supporting materials.
  3. Respond to review requests. Address questions and supply additional documentation where needed.
  4. Track the outcome. Review revised estimates and organize completion or payment documentation.

Why documentation matters

A reviewer should be able to connect the requested work with its location, quantity, and supporting evidence. Clear photos, measured quantities, and concise notes make that connection easier to follow.

Set realistic expectations

Claim outcomes and timing vary with the file, policy, evidence, and carrier review. Use past results as examples rather than a guarantee. RCV describes estimate value, which is different from the cash ultimately paid.
